The Makita DDF484RTJ delivers 54 Nm in hard joints from a compact 18V machine weighing 1.6 kg, built for daily driving and drilling in wood and steel. The brushless motor gives more screws per charge than a brushed motor, and with two 5.0 Ah batteries in the kit the tool never stands idle while one charges.
The two-speed metal gearbox sits in an aluminium housing: first gear gives 0–550 rpm for high-torque driving, second gear 0–2,000 rpm for drilling. The single-sleeve keyless chuck takes shanks from 1.5 to 13 mm. Drilling capacity is 38 mm in wood and 13 mm in steel.
XPT (Extreme Protection Technology) seals the tool against dust and water splashes, suiting it to building sites and outdoor work. A large electronic trigger gives fine speed control, the LED light illuminates the work area and the grip is rubberised. The kit comes complete in a Makpac case with fast charger.
What makes the Makita DDF484RTJ a strong choice for tradespeople?
The balance between power and size. 54 Nm handles structural wood screws and drilling with hole saws, while the tool is just 172 mm long and weighs 1.6 kg — short enough for work between studs and inside cabinets, light enough to hold overhead for a full shift. The metal gearbox withstands the shock loads that occur when a bit binds, where a plastic gearbox wears.
Applications for the drill driver
It is used in carpentry and assembly, interior fit-out and kitchen installation, electrical and plumbing work where holes are drilled through studs and sheet metal, and for fitting hardware and fixings. The XPT protection also makes it usable on building sites and in damp areas where an unprotected tool risks drawing dust and moisture into the motor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can the Makita DDF484RTJ drill into concrete and brick?
No. The DDF484RTJ has no hammer function and is built for drilling wood up to 38 mm and steel up to 13 mm, plus screw driving. Drilling concrete, brick and natural stone requires hammer action. Light work in aerated block and plasterboard is possible, but masonry calls for a combi drill or rotary hammer.
Which batteries fit the Makita DDF484RTJ?
The tool runs on Makita 18V batteries, and the kit includes two BL1850B at 5.0 Ah plus the DC18RC fast charger. The same batteries and charger power Makita's other 18V tools, so anyone already on the platform can share batteries between them. With two batteries, one charges while the other is in use.
What separates the Makita DDF484RTJ from the DHP484 combi drill?
The hammer function. The DHP484 has a hammer mechanism for drilling masonry and concrete, while the DDF484 does without and is therefore slightly shorter and lighter. Otherwise they share the motor, 54 Nm torque, two-speed metal gearbox and XPT protection. Anyone drilling only wood and steel and driving screws gets a handier tool in the DDF484; anyone also drilling brick and concrete should choose the DHP484.
